Philoptochos

The St Athanasios Philoptochos Chapter is comprised of over 100 women of the parish of diverse ages and backgrounds working together to reach out not only to the parish membership, but also to the community and to the world at large through fundraising, charitable donation and volunteerism and to carry out the mission of the national Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society:

• to aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widow, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of the impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who my need the help of the Church through fund raising efforts; and

• to promote the charitable, benevolent and philanthropic purposes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, through instructional programs, presentations, lectures, seminars and other educational resources;

• to preserve and perpetuate Orthodox Christian concepts and the Orthodox Christian Family, and through them, to promote the Greek Orthodox Faith and traditions, in accordance with its doctrines, canons, discipline, divine worship, usages and customs;

• To promote the participation in the activities of the Greek Orthodox community, with the cooperation of the Parish Priest and the Parish Council.

In the 2005-2006 year, the St Athanasios Chapter raised and donated thousands of dollars in support of such charities as Philoxenia House, the Metropolis Phillanthropy Fund, The Humanitarian Services Project Adopt a Senior Program, the Wheaton Family Shelter, the Greek American Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home, Wayside Cross Mission, The Illinois State Police, St Basil’s Academy, Junior Olympics, Support a Mission Priest, the Archdiocese Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and many others including the support of local families who require special assistance.

In addition, we participate in the Feed the Hungry program annually, providing meals, meal service and clothing to the homeless in the Chicago area and visit the Greek American Rehab Center and Nursing home to provide fellowship and friendship.

We are also proud to have awarded two scholarships this year to college students in our parish!
